Sony May Launch A New PlayStation 5 As Early As 2019, Complete With 4K Goodness To Drool On!

Console makers are going nuts. They can't keep up with the pace of changing technology, and it shows with the decisions they're making...

Just in the past couple of years, we’ve had quite the range of consoles coming to market. Sony’s PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, the Xbox One S and upcoming Xbox One X, and now even the new Nintendo Switch. The focus is clearly beyond just HD 1080p content here.

Now, experts indicate we may even see a PlayStation 5 very soon. In a Gaming Boltreport, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Patcher says Sony’s next gaming console could be on the scene within the next two years.
Shawn Layden, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertaiment America, recently told Golem.de that there would definitely be a PS 5 coming up, just not very soon. Patcher believes Layden isn’t just creating empty hype, but we’re likely to get the next generation of console, instead of just a hardware upgrade like in the PS4 Pro. Specifically, he thinks we’ll get our hands on the next-gen console in 2019.

4K television sales will dictate 4K gaming trends

Patcher’s prediction is based on the sale of 4K televisions around the world, something the PS5 is likely to focus on. He says the new console is only likely to launch when 4K TVs account for half of the total US market share, and 35 percent worldwide. Consumers are expected to hit those numbers sometime in 2019, so we could see the PlayStation 5 that year, or perhaps later in 2020.
